Becoming rabies-free remains a challenge for most parts of the world, especially in developing countries where canine (dog) rabies is common.

What is a Developing Country?
After WW2, the world map was divided into the First World, Second or Third World. These terms are more about politics than economics, so at RFW we talk about Developing Countries.

Japan and the Philippines were both part of the old 'Third World'. Today Japan is a wealthy, industrialized country. It's also rabies-free because strong animal control laws are in place.

The Philippines is a developing country and canine rabies is a real problem there. RFW is actively working to help make the Philippines a rabies-free country through dog vaccination and rabies awareness programs.

Why Is Canine Rabies So Common?
Less money is spent on animal control and care in developing countries such as the Philippines.

It costs $1 to give a dog a rabies shot. But when it's a choice between a $1 vaccine or feeding a family, it's less likely the dog will be vaccinated.

Due to the costs of owning a dog, many are left to stray. They have puppies, also strays, and the numbers keep on growing. This aids the spread of rabies.
